Russell M. Nelson: The Surgeon Who Became a Prophet

He built his own heart-lung machine in a garage laboratory in Salt Lake City, wired together from parts and stubbornness, because no one would sell one to a young surgeon in a state that had never performed open-heart surgery. Russell Marion Nelson used it in 1955 to save a life no one else in the region could have saved, then spent the next seven decades running two careers that most people would consider mutually exclusive: elite cardiac surgery and the top office of a global religion.

A Garage, a Machine, and Utah's First Open Heart

Nelson was born September 9, 1924, in Salt Lake City, the son of Marion Clavar Nelson and Floss Edna Anderson, in a household that was not particularly religious. He raced through the University of Utah with Phi Beta Kappa honors, took his medical degree there in 1947 ranked first in his class, and then went to the University of Minnesota, then the epicenter of American heart surgery, to train under the pioneers inventing the field as they went. He was part of Clarence Dennis's team that performed the first human open-heart operation using cardiopulmonary bypass, in April 1951 — a procedure so new that the machine keeping the patient alive had barely been proven to work. He earned a PhD there in 1954 for his research into cardiac surgery, then took the knowledge home.

Back in Utah, there was no bypass machine to borrow, so Nelson built one himself. In 1955 he used it to perform the first open-heart surgery west of the Mississippi River, making Utah only the third state in the country where the operation had been done. The following year he performed the region's first successful pediatric cardiac operation. He later achieved what colleagues have called a genuine surgical first: a successful repair of tricuspid valve regurgitation, a technique later documented in academic surgical literature as a milestone in valve repair. Over roughly three decades as chief of cardiothoracic surgery, first at the University of Utah and then at LDS Hospital, he performed an estimated 7,000 operations, trained a generation of surgeons, served two years as an Army Medical Corps captain treating patients at Walter Reed during the Korean War, and eventually operated on Spencer W. Kimball, a sitting president of his own church, replacing a diseased aortic valve years before he himself would hold that office.

A Second, Parallel Life

While operating almost daily, Nelson was simultaneously building a career inside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that had nothing to do with medicine. He had been baptized at sixteen, served as a Sunday School superintendent while training in Minnesota, and by the 1960s and 1970s was a stake president in Salt Lake City, then general president of the church's worldwide Sunday School program, where he devised an eight-year cycle for teaching scripture that structured how millions of members studied their texts. He gave Temple Square tours as a volunteer missionary for a decade, two hours every Thursday afternoon, alongside running a surgical practice.

In 1984, Spencer W. Kimball called Nelson — the surgeon who had once operated on him — into the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the church's second-highest governing body. Nelson was 59, at the height of his medical career, and he set down the scalpel for a full-time ecclesiastical post. He would serve 34 years as an apostle, longer than all but a handful of men in the religion's history, before rising to lead the Quorum in 2015.

Ascending to the Presidency

Thomas S. Monson, the church's president, died on January 2, 2018. Twelve days later, at 93, Nelson was ordained the seventeenth President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, its senior-most and, by the faith's doctrine, its prophetic office. He would hold it for nearly eight years, becoming in 2022 the oldest church president in its history and, in 2024, the first to reach his hundredth birthday in office — an anniversary the church marked with a global livestream.

Nelson used the presidency to make changes at a pace unusual for an institution built on continuity. He shortened Sunday worship from three hours to two, replaced the church's long-standing home-teaching and visiting-teaching programs with a looser system called "ministering," and pushed a return to the church's full legal name over the informal "Mormon" shorthand that had defined its public identity for a century, arguing that dropping "Jesus Christ" from the name was "a major victory for Satan." He announced an unprecedented wave of new temple construction — some 200 by 2025, the most ambitious building program in the church's history — and in 2019 stood at the Vatican for the first meeting ever held between a sitting pope and an LDS church president. That same year he reversed a 2015 policy that had barred children of same-sex couples from baptism, describing the reversal as "revelation upon revelation," a phrase that captured both his claim to ongoing divine guidance and the church's evolving posture on a fraught social question.

The Surgeon's Habits of Mind in a Prophet's Office

Colleagues who worked beside him in the operating room, writing in his American Surgical Association memorial, avoided grand language about his intellect, calling him instead "more than a skilled surgeon and compassionate physician" — "the kindest and most generous human that you could find." The praise on record is about character and care as much as cognition. But the arc of his medical career is, on its own terms, a case study in applied ingenuity under constraint: a young doctor with no functioning bypass machine in his state built one, then used it to open a category of surgery in a place that had none.

Why Russell Is Called a Genius

The label attaches, when it attaches at all, to a specific and narrow kind of brilliance: the improvisational engineering and manual precision required to build a working heart-lung machine from available parts in the 1950s and then operate on a beating, stopped heart with it — not once, but across roughly 7,000 operations over three decades, with innovations along the way, including what surgical historians count as a genuine first in tricuspid valve repair. That is craft and applied science fused, the practical intelligence of a surgeon-engineer rather than the abstract intelligence of a theorist; nothing in the record credits him with a discovery of cardiac physiology or a body of published theory that reshaped the field the way his mentors' work did. His own surgical division's memorial explicitly emphasizes his kindness and mentorship over any claim to genius, and no biographical source consulted uses the word about him directly. The stronger, better-supported claim is narrower: that he was an exceptionally skilled, self-reliant surgical pioneer in a resource-poor setting, and separately, an unusually consequential religious leader — two distinct forms of competence that happened to occupy one long life, rather than a single unified genius spanning both.

Legacy

Nelson died at his Salt Lake City home on September 27, 2025, at 101, having lost his sight in his final months. He was buried beside his first wife, Dantzel, in Salt Lake City Cemetery after a funeral at the Conference Center attended by his church's full leadership. He left behind two records rarely combined in one life: a surgical division at the University of Utah that still bears a professorship in his name, and a church whose Sunday schedule, temple map, and official name he had personally reshaped in his final decade.
