Early Career and Dynamo Kyiv
Born on 29 October 1981 in Poltava, Rotan began his professional trajectory with Dnipro during the 1999–2000 season. Over his initial tenure, he made 105 appearances and scored 11 goals. In the summer of 2005, he moved to Dynamo Kyiv, assigned the number 14 jersey. During his time in Kyiv, he played 50 matches and recorded five goals in the Ukrainian Premier League, securing the league title in 2006–07 alongside domestic cup and super cup victories.

Rotan rejoined his home club, Dnipro, during the 2007–08 winter break on a three-year contract, eventually wearing the number 29 jersey. He earned recognition as the league's top assister for the 2008–09 season. Following the expiration of his contract in 2014, he turned down an offer from Rubin Kazan due to the political climate surrounding the Russian military intervention in Ukraine. He subsequently signed a three-year deal with Dnipro on 8 August 2014.
International Representation
Making his debut for Ukraine on 12 February 2003 against Turkey in İzmir, Rotan earned 100 caps, becoming the third-most capped player in the nation's history. He was part of the 2006 FIFA World Cup squad that reached the quarter-finals, where he scored three goals during the qualification stages. He also participated in UEFA Euro 2012 and UEFA Euro 2016.
Transition to Management
Following a one-year stint with Slavia Prague in 2017, where he played seven matches, Rotan concluded his playing career. He has since transitioned into coaching. As of 24 May 2025, he serves as the manager of Polissya Zhytomyr. His coaching efforts have been recognized with the Best Coach of the Ukrainian Premier League award for the 2024–25 season and multiple Coach of the Round honors in 2025–26.
