Born in Baku in 1939, Ibrahimbeyov initially pursued a technical education at the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industrial University. Beginning in the 1970s, Ibrahimbeyov maintained a productive collaboration with director Nikita Mikhalkov. Their work on the 1991 film Urga, Territory of Love earned the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and a Felix Award in Berlin. The duo achieved further prominence with the 1994 film Burnt by the Sun, which secured the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he contributed to international co-productions, including East/West and the historical epic Nomad.
Institutional Leadership and Public Advocacy
Ibrahimbeyov served as chairman of the Confederation of Filmmakers' Unions and the Cinematographers' Union of Azerbaijan. Beyond film, he managed the Ibrus Theatre, which he founded in 2001 to stage performances in both Russian and Azerbaijani. His later years were marked by political activism, including his role in the Intelligentsia Forum, where he challenged state policies regarding cultural autonomy and constitutional limitations on presidential terms in Azerbaijan.
Recognition and Legacy
Throughout his career, Ibrahimbeyov received numerous accolades, including the Shohrat Order, the People's Writer of Azerbaijan title, and the Order of Friendship in 2019. He held the status of Honored Art Worker of the Russian Federation and the Azerbaijan SSR. Following his death in 2022 in Moscow, he was interred at the Alley of Honor in Baku.
