Romano Galeffi

Italian philosopher (1915–1998)

The first course in Aesthetics at the Federal University of Bahia was established by Romano Galeffi, a philosopher who fundamentally shaped the academic landscape of Brazil. Although his career spanned continents, his intellectual origins remained firmly rooted in the rigorous traditions of Italian scholarship before his transition to a permanent academic life in Salvador.

Early Education and Influences

Born in Montevarchi in 1915, Galeffi completed his secondary schooling in Arezzo. He subsequently relocated to Rome to attend La Sapienza. During his university years, he participated in lectures delivered by prominent figures including Giovanni Gentile, Ugo Spirito, and Franco Lombardi. His philosophical development was primarily influenced by Benedetto Croce, whom he eventually followed as a disciple. In 1945, he earned his degree following the submission of a thesis focusing on Henri Bergson. This specific work garnered professional recognition from European scholars Louis Lavelle and Jacques Chevalier.
