Early Career and Operatic Breakthrough
After being discovered as a singer by baritone Arturo Nieto, Villazón pursued formal training. By 1999, his success at Operalia, where he also claimed the Zarzuela and audience prizes, led to his Italian debut in Massenet's Manon. His transition to major houses followed rapidly, with his 2000 debut at the Berlin State Opera in Macbeth and subsequent appearances in Munich and Los Angeles.

Throughout the mid-2000s, Villazón appeared at the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House, and the Salzburg Festival. His career saw a temporary interruption between 2007 and 2009 due to a congenital vocal cord cyst, necessitating surgery. Following rehabilitation, he returned to the stage in 2010, shifting his repertoire to include diverse roles and focusing on the works of Mozart.
Administrative and Directorial Roles
Beyond performing, Villazón has engaged in extensive stage direction, beginning with Massenet's Werther in 2011. He has directed productions at the Opéra de Lyon, the Vienna Volksoper, and the Salzburg Festival. In 2018, he became the artistic director of Mozart Week in Salzburg, later extending his leadership to the International Mozarteum Foundation through 2028.

Villazón holds French citizenship and resides in France. His output extends to writing, with novels including Malabares and Paladas de sombra contra la oscuridad.
