Early Development and Education
Born in 1944 in Zhenning Buyei and Miao Autonomous County, Ren faced extreme poverty during his youth, particularly during the 1960 famine in Guizhou Province. Despite significant hardships, he pursued education at the Chongqing Institute of Architectural Engineering, later merged into Chongqing University. During the Cultural Revolution, his family background caused him to face social and political scrutiny, yet he remained committed to self-study, mastering subjects including automatic control, logic, and multiple foreign languages.

In 1968, Ren began his professional life assigned to the Infrastructure Engineering Corps in Anshun to support the construction of an aircraft factory. By 1974, he joined the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) as a technician and engineer, focusing on automation processes within the chemical industry. This period included his work establishing the Liaoyang Petrochemical Fiber General Factory. His military career concluded in 1982 when government reforms reduced the size of the armed forces, leading him to relocate to Shenzhen.
Transition to Entrepreneurship
After moving to Shenzhen, Ren joined the Southern Oil Group but quickly grew frustrated with the bureaucratic nature of the organization. A failed venture as the deputy general manager of an electronics company resulted in a significant financial loss of over 2 million yuan. Following this setback and his subsequent resignation, he founded Huawei. He eventually secured early capital by selling program-controlled switching technology, marking the company’s shift toward large-scale telecommunications development.
