The British Women's Chess Championship title was awarded to Hamid three times: in 1983, 1985, and 1989. Her 1983 victory was shared with Helen Milligan. Beyond these domestic British wins, she secured a gold medal at the Commonwealth Chess event in Delhi in 2017. In 2018, she reached the Zonal Champion status and received the Journalists Choice Award during the Chess World Cup held in Russia.
Olympic and Global Engagement
Starting in 1984, Hamid began a streak of appearances at World Chess Olympiads, including three entries in the general team category. At the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest in September 2024, at the age of 80, she played for the Bangladesh women's team, securing a win against Springer Leshay of Barbados.
Recognition and Legacy
In 2024, the government recognized her contributions to the field with the Begum Rokeya Padak. Her career remains distinct for its longevity, spanning citizenships under the British Raj, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Her family life included marriage to sports organizer Lieutenant colonel MA Hamid until his death in 2008, with children active in various national sports including football, squash, and handball.
