Early Life and Education
Born in Kolkata on 27 July 1967 to Rupen and Kumud Bose, Rahul Bose attended the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai. His exposure to athletics began in childhood through boxing and rugby union, with cricket coaching provided by Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. After graduating from Sydenham College, where he played on the rugby team, Bose pursued a career in advertising, working as a copywriter and creative director at Rediffusion until the release of his first film.

Following a screen test for director Dev Benegal, Bose played civil servant Agastya Sen in English, August. The film gained international recognition as the first Indian production acquired by 20th Century Fox. He later starred in Split Wide Open, for which he prepared by observing Mumbai slum residents. His role in the 2002 film Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, directed by Aparna Sen, garnered critical acclaim for its examination of communal violence, while his 2001 directorial effort, Everybody Says I'm Fine!, earned him the runner-up John Schlesinger Award.
Mainstream Bollywood and Beyond
Bose pivoted to mainstream Bollywood with the 2003 film Jhankaar Beats, a commercial success in urban multiplexes. He subsequently starred in films such as Chameli, 15 Park Avenue, and the romantic comedy Pyaar Ke Side Effects, where he employed a fourth-wall-breaking narrative style. His filmography also includes the 2013 Tamil thriller Vishwaroopam, the Bengali films Anuranan and Laptop, and appearances in mainstream hits like Dil Dhadakne Do.
Activism and Athletics
Beyond his artistic work, Bose is known for his social activism, including participation in relief efforts following the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. He founded an anti-discrimination NGO titled The Foundation. As a sportsman, he competed in the Western India Championships, winning a silver medal in boxing, and has served as the president of Rugby India since 2021.
