Piero Carlo Pirelli navigated the expansion of his family's industrial enterprise while concurrently steering major developments in Italian athletics. Born in Milan in 1881 to Giovanni Battista Pirelli and Maria Sormani, his career spanned leadership in tyre manufacturing, service as a cavalry officer during the First World War, and a significant political tenure as a national councillor.
Industrial Development
Pirelli pursued formal education at the University of Genoa, where he obtained a degree in legal sciences, later supplemented by studies at the Polytechnic University of Milan and Bocconi University. In 1904, he traveled to the United States to study electrical cable production. He returned to Italy to integrate these technical advancements into his father's business. Following his service on the Italian front during the First World War, he resumed his duties at the firm. He assumed the presidency of the company in 1932, a role he held following the death of Giovanni Battista Pirelli.

His interests extended to sports management and infrastructure development. He served as the president of AC Milan from 1909 to 1928, personally funding the construction of the San Siro stadium in 1926. In 1918, he founded the Pirelli Sports Group and oversaw the creation of the Pirelli field, located near the Bicocca degli Arcimboldi in Viale Sarca. The Italian Football Federation recognized his legacy in 1948 by awarding him the title of Pioneer of Italian football on the organization's 50th anniversary.
Political and Public Life
Beyond his industrial and sporting roles, Pirelli participated in the national legislative sphere. He served as a national councillor to the Chamber of Fasci and Corporations between 1939 and 1943. He remained a resident of Milan throughout his life, eventually passing away in 1956. His remains are interred within the family tomb at the Cimitero Monumentale di Milano.
