Pier Silvio Berlusconi

Italian entrepreneur in the media business

The career of Pier Silvio Berlusconi centers on the transformation of the Mediaset Group into the multinational holding company now known as MFE-MediaForEurope. Born in Milan in 1969, he navigated the transition of his family's media interests from domestic Italian television networks into a complex, pan-European radio and digital content conglomerate through strategic corporate restructuring and international acquisitions.

Early Career and Media Management

Entering the professional sphere in 1992, he joined Publitalia, the advertising agency owned by the Berlusconi family. He shifted his focus to the television sector by joining the Italia 1 network. By November 1996, he coordinated programming across all Mediaset networks. His role expanded in 1999 when he became the deputy General Director of Content at RTI, the subsidiary overseeing all television operations. In April 2000, he took the position of Vice President at Mediaset, eventually assuming the role of CEO in 2015.

Expansion and Radio Broadcasting

He diversified the company's portfolio in 2016 by founding RadioMediaset. This entity integrated Radio 105, R101, Virgin Radio, Radio Monte Carlo, and Radio Subasio. Under his leadership, the radio conglomerate achieved significant market penetration, emerging as the leading Italian radio broadcaster by the first half of 2023, based on data provided by TER.

Strategic Acquisitions and Disputes

In 2016, he pursued a partnership with Vivendi to create an international content production and distribution entity. The relationship deteriorated in 2017 when Vivendi sought to revise the agreement, triggering a multi-year legal dispute that was not resolved until May 3, 2021. Despite this, he aggressively targeted European growth, initiating an acquisition of shares in the German broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 in 2019. By 2022, his company secured a 25.01% stake, becoming the largest shareholder.

Corporate Restructuring and Inheritance

Under his guidance, the Mediaset board proposed a company-wide rebrand to MFE-MediaForEurope, which shareholders approved on 25 November 2021. Following the death of his father, Silvio Berlusconi, he and his siblings accepted the family inheritance on 10 September 2023. As a shareholder of the holding company Fininvest, he retains a significant stake in the management of these media assets.
