Early Career in Finland
Koponen began his basketball trajectory at Malmi Super-Koris before moving to Espoo Honka in 2004. Under coach Mihailo Pavićević, he played a central role in the 2006–07 Finnish League championship win. During this period, he balanced his professional development with mandatory military service at the Lahti Military Academy. By December 2007, he demonstrated notable resilience, leading the Honka Playboys to an overtime victory while competing with a concussion.

In 2008, Koponen signed a four-year contract with the Italian team Virtus Bologna, securing the 2009 FIBA EuroChallenge title. His path later led to Russia, where he joined Khimki in 2012. During his four-year stint there, he earned a spot on the All-EuroCup First Team and won the 2014–15 EuroCup. Subsequent years saw him move to Barcelona in 2016 and Bayern Munich in 2018, followed by a brief period with Pallacanestro Reggiana and a return to the Helsinki Seagulls.
National Team and Retirement
Koponen represented Finland through various stages, starting with youth teams in 2004. He debuted for the senior men's team in 2007 and featured in multiple EuroBasket tournaments between 2011 and 2022. He also played in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. Following persistent hip issues, he retired from professional club play after the 2021–22 season, eventually stepping back from the national team after reaching the EuroBasket 2022 quarter-finals.
Transition to Coaching
After retiring as a player, Koponen moved into coaching, starting with the Helsinki Basketball Academy and the EuroLeague Next Generation tournament. After serving on the San Antonio Spurs coaching staff for the 2024 NBA Summer League, he was appointed head coach of the New Zealand Breakers in the NBL. His tenure included a strong start to the 2024–25 season and a victory in the inaugural NBL Ignite Cup Final, before he parted ways with the organization in February 2026.
