Early Career in Cuba and Mexico
Born in Matanzas, Cuba, in 1916, Pérez Prado began his musical development as a pianist and arranger for the Sonora Matancera ensemble in his hometown. After establishing his own group, he recorded early mambo compositions in Havana in 1946, such as "Trompetiana". He later moved to Mexico, where he expanded his repertoire by developing sub-genres including bolero-mambo, guaracha-mambo, and his own inventions, mambo batiri and mambo kaen.

The success of his 1949 recordings secured a contract with RCA Victor, facilitating a prolific decade. His cover of Louiguy's "Cherry Pink (and Apple Blossom White)" reached number one in 1955, remaining on the charts for ten consecutive weeks and achieving gold disc status.
Challenges and Later Years
Pérez Prado's influence in the United States diminished during the 1960s as music trends shifted toward pachanga and boogaloo. Despite attempting to introduce a new rhythm called "dengue," he never regained his peak popularity. He returned to Mexico in the 1970s and became a naturalized citizen in 1980. Following his death in Mexico City in 1989, his son, Pérez Prado Jr., continued the legacy by directing the Pérez Prado Orchestra.
