Early Career and Domestic Play
Montgomery attended the South African College Schools in Cape Town. His early professional years involved playing for Western Province in the Currie Cup and the Stormers in the Super Rugby competition. By the end of 2001, he had already accumulated 50 caps for the national team, having debuted against the British & Irish Lions in 1997 as an outside centre.

In 2002, he moved to Wales to join Newport RFC, later transitioning to the Newport Gwent Dragons. His time in Wales was interrupted in 2003 when he received a two-year ban, with 18 months suspended, for pushing a touch judge. This incident resulted in his absence from the 2003 Rugby World Cup. He eventually returned to South Africa in 2004, prompted by a change in national selection policy that allowed overseas-based players to compete for the Springboks.
Records and Global Success
Upon his return, coach Jake White recalled him to the national setup. Montgomery served as a key player in the 2007 Rugby World Cup victory, where he was the tournament's leading point scorer. During his tenure, he achieved multiple milestones, including surpassing the 600-point mark in 2006 and the 700-point mark in 2007. In September 2007, he equaled the record for most appearances by a Springbok, later securing the record outright.
Transition to Coaching and Business
After retiring from international rugby in August 2008, Montgomery transitioned briefly into a coaching role, serving as a kicking consultant for the Springboks during the 2009 British & Irish Lions tour. His playing career concluded at the end of the 2009 Super 14 season. Outside of rugby, he co-founded the tequila brand El Centurion 102 with his partner, Doris van Niekerk, in 2021.
