Patricia Urquiola Hidalgo, born in 1961 in Oviedo, Spain, maintains a multifaceted practice as an architect, industrial designer, and art director based in Milan. Her career spans decades of global projects, ranging from luxury hospitality interiors to complex art installations, establishing her as a figure in both the structural and aesthetic dimensions of contemporary design.

Formative Years and Early Career

After completing her architectural studies at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, she relocated to Milan to finish her training at the Politecnico di Milano. She graduated in 1989 under the mentorship of Achille Castiglioni. Her professional trajectory included a period working with Vico Magistretti and a tenure as the Head of Design at Lissoni Associati. In 2001, she established her own studio in Milan, which serves as the base for her design and architectural operations.

Architectural and Hospitality Projects

Her portfolio includes high-profile hospitality developments and commercial spaces. Significant projects comprise the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Barcelona, the spa at the Four Seasons Hotel in Milan, Das Stue Hotel in Berlin, and Il Sereno Hotel on Lake Como. She also designed Six Senses Rome and Casa Brera in Milan. Her work extends to restaurant interiors such as IGNIV locations in Zurich, Bangkok, and Saint Moritz, alongside the Jumeirah Capri Palace.

Collaborations and Creative Leadership

Since 2015, she has served as the Art Director of Cassina. Her industrial design output includes showrooms and installations for partners such as BMW, Ferrari, Swarovski, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, and Missoni. Her contributions to the design field include advisory board roles at the Politecnico di Milano and Altagamma, as well as being a member of the Board of Directors for the Triennale di Milano.

Recognition and Institutional Presence

Her work occupies permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. Numerous accolades recognize her impact, including the 2011 Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes and the Order of Isabella the Catholic. In 2024, she received the title of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and gained induction into the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.
