A 1971 Laurea Degree from the Sapienza University of Rome marked the beginning of a long career in mathematical analysis for Paolo Marcellini. Since his postgraduate studies at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa under Ennio De Giorgi, he has focused his research on the calculus of variations and partial differential equations, holding influential academic and administrative roles across Italy.
Academic Progression
After his time in Pisa, Marcellini served as an assistant and lecturer at the University of Florence. By 1981, he held full professorships in Naples and at the University of Tor Vergata in Rome before returning to the University of Florence in 1985 as a professor of analysis. He eventually transitioned to the role of Professor Emeritus. Throughout his tenure in Florence, he directed the Department of Mathematics Ulisse Dini, served as Dean of the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences, and coordinated the institution's PhD doctoral program.

Marcellini’s research interests include the theory of non-linear elasticity and biology. He has engaged in extensive international collaboration, serving as a visiting scientist at institutions including the Collège de France, the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, the University of California at Berkeley, and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. His work has also taken him to the Academia Sinica in Taipei, the Australian National University, and the Russian Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk.
Institutional Leadership and Recognition
Beyond his teaching, Marcellini directed the Italian National Group GNAMPA of the Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica (INdAM) from 2013 to 2017, having also served in the Scientific Direction of the INdAM between 1999 and 2003. In 2007, he was appointed a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Tuscany, known as La Colombaria. In August 2023, he received the 2022 Ames JMAA Prize for his paper titled Growth conditions and regularity for weak solutions to nonlinear elliptic pdes, which was published in 2021.
