Early Career and Matanza Cine
Trapero began his directing work in 1993 with Mocoso malcriado, followed by Negocios in 1995. In 2002, he founded Matanza Cine. This production company operates to facilitate film projects for both Trapero and other filmmakers. His own production credits outside of his directorial work include titles such as La Libertad, Ciudad de María, La Mecha, and Mi Mejor Enemigo.

Trapero has maintained a long-standing association with major international film festivals. Following his debut, El Bonaerense premiered at Cannes in 2002, while Familia Rodante debuted at Venice in 2004, and Nacido y Criado appeared at Toronto in 2006. His 2008 film Leonera was presented in Competition at Cannes, where he later showcased Carancho in 2010 and Elefante Blanco in 2012 within the Un Certain Regard section. In 2015, he won the Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice International Film Festival for The Clan.
Institutional Roles and Recognition
Beyond production and direction, Trapero has participated as a juror at major festivals, including Venice, San Sebastian, and Locarno. He served as the President of the Un Certain Regard jury at Cannes in 2014. In 2015, he was named a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, becoming the first South American director to receive this specific honor. He also received a Konex Award in 2011.

His professional output extends into television and streaming production. His credits in the medium include the 2003 series Ensayo, the 2020 project ZeroZeroZero, and the 2023 series Echo 3. His filmography continued to expand with the 2018 film La Quietud and the 2025 release & Sons.
