Early Career and European Debut
Contreras emerged from the youth system of Colo-Colo in his native Chile. He debuted professionally in 1997, contributing to two first division league titles. By 1999, he moved to France to join Monaco. During his tenure there, he secured league and Supercup victories in 2000. However, his time in France faced complications in 2001 when a Paris court fined him 30,000 euros for utilizing a fake Italian passport, resulting in a two-year ban.

Following his exit from Monaco, Contreras engaged in various loan spells, including stints with Racing Club and Osasuna. In 2001, he was sold to the Spanish club Celta de Vigo for 4.2 million euros. After spending time with Sporting CP, he returned to Celta, where he accumulated over 100 matches.
Greek Football and Later Years
In 2008, Contreras joined the Greek club PAOK, where he eventually served as team captain. He departed in 2012 due to the Greek government debt crisis and returned to Colo-Colo under coach Ivo Basay. Later that year, he returned to Greece to join Olympiacos, followed by a move to the Australian club Melbourne Victory in 2013, where he debuted in the first round against Melbourne Heart.
