Early Career and Espanyol
Raised in Arrecifes, Zabaleta began his youth progression at Obras Sanitarias before joining San Lorenzo in 2002. His versatility allowed him to shift from a defensive midfielder to the right side of the pitch. In 2005, he moved to the Spanish club Espanyol for a fee of 3 million euros. During his tenure there, he contributed to a 2005–06 Copa del Rey victory and participated in the 2006–07 UEFA Cup final.

Zabaleta joined Manchester City on 31 August 2008 for approximately 6.45 million pounds, rejecting an offer from Juventus. He earned the Manchester City Player of the Year award for the 2012–13 season and appeared in the Premier League PFA Team of the Year that same year.
International Representation
A full international for Argentina since 2005, Zabaleta featured in the 2011 and 2015 Copa América tournaments. He was also a member of the squad that reached the 2014 FIFA World Cup final. His national team experience began earlier in his career, captaining the Argentina under-20 side to victory in the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship.
Transition to Coaching
Following his departure from Manchester City in 2017, Zabaleta spent time with West Ham United. He eventually moved into the coaching sphere. Since January 2023, he has served as the assistant manager for the Albania national football team, working alongside head coach Sylvinho.
