Der Ozean, published in 1886, marked a shift in German academic geography by bringing marine science into the public consciousness. Otto Krümmel, who was born in 1854 in Bydgoszcz, dedicated his professional life to the formal study of oceanography, bridging the gap between classical geographical traditions and the systematic investigation of the seas during the late nineteenth century.
Academic Foundation
Krümmel pursued his higher education at the University of Göttingen, where he studied under Johann Eduard Wappäus and Karl von Seebach. Although his intellectual origins were rooted in the study of history and classics, his research trajectory shifted significantly during his tenure at the German Naval Observatory in Hamburg in 1882 and 1883. This period established his focus on marine subjects, a transition that defined his career as a teacher and researcher.

In 1883, Krümmel accepted an associate professorship of geography at the University of Kiel, achieving the status of full professor the following year. He remained at the institution until 1911, eventually serving as rector in 1897. His time in this seaport provided the necessary access to marine data and vessels, facilitating his involvement in the 1889 Plankton Expedition aboard the National in the North Atlantic Ocean.
Contributions to Oceanography
His academic output included completing Heinrich Georg von Boguslawski's contribution to Friedrich Ratzel’s geographical handbook series in 1887. His professional efforts culminated in the production of the Handbuch der Ozeanographie, published in two parts between 1907 and 1911, which solidified his reputation as a primary figure in the formalization of oceanographic study.
Final Years
Following nearly three decades at Kiel, Krümmel moved to the University of Marburg in 1911 to replace Theobald Fischer as the professor of geography. He held this position until his death in Cologne in 1912. He lived to the age of 58, leaving behind a body of work that integrated physical geography with specialized marine research.
