The musical score of the Swedish royal anthem, Kungssången, was first presented by Otto Lindblad on 5 December 1844. This performance occurred during a celebration held for King Oscar I. Across his career in Sweden, Lindblad functioned as a versatile professional, balancing duties as a composer, violinist, conductor, bell-ringer, and choir director.
Academic Foundations and Early Collaborations
Born in Karlstorp in 1809 to a clergyman, Lindblad completed his gymnasium education in Växjö before moving to Lund University in 1829. During his time as a student, he studied under Mathias Lundholm. Alongside collaborators A. E. Christernin and J. Meurling, he formed a musical group referred to as the musical trefoil band, which focused on three-part compositions. He concluded his formal academic tenure in 1836 to pursue a full-time career in music, eventually establishing the Lund Student Singers Association.

In 1846, Lindblad launched a national tour as part of the Lund Quartet. This venture intended to generate funds for student housing in Lund, though the financial results were modest, netting only 1500 Riksdaler. By the spring of 1847, he transitioned to administrative and musical duties, securing a position as a parish clerk and organist in Mellby. In 1855, he married Emma Andersson; the couple had one daughter, who died during infancy.
Musical Legacy
Lindblad composed several notable works throughout his life, including "Trollhättan," "Liten fågel," "Minnets temple," "Sångfåglarne," "Ångbåtssång," and the composition "Längtan till landet," frequently identified by the opening line "Vintern rasat ut...". His output also included a piece titled "Till konung Oscar I." Following a prolonged period of health decline, Lindblad died in the Norra Mellby church parish in 1864 at the age of 55.
