Early Education and Career Trajectory
Born in Istanbul in 1842 to Ibrahim Edhem Pasha, Osman Hamdi initially pursued legal studies in Constantinople and later in Paris. He ultimately abandoned law to study painting under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Gustave Boulanger. After returning to the Ottoman capital in 1869, he joined the administration of Midhat Pasha in Baghdad before serving as the first mayor of Kadıköy in 1875.

In 1881, he became the director of the Imperial Museum. He spearheaded the development of the Istanbul Archaeology Museums, which officially opened in 1891. His efforts were instrumental in creating a legal framework for protecting historical artifacts, specifically the 1884 law that restricted the illegal export of antiquities. He also led scientific excavations at major sites, including the tomb-sanctuary on Nemrut Dağı, the Hekate sanctuary in Lagina, and historical sites in Sidon.
Academic and Artistic Contributions
Beyond his administrative and archaeological duties, he established the Academy of Fine Arts in 1882 to provide local training in aesthetics and techniques. As a painter, he maintained the style of his French mentors while frequently incorporating himself and his family members into his compositions. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts and maintained professional ties with international institutions like the University of Pennsylvania, which awarded him an honorary degree in 1894.
