Academic Foundations and Early Career
Born in 1963 in Tehran, Iran, Kordestani attended the Andisheh Don Bosco School. Following the death of his father in 1976, he relocated to San Jose, California. He graduated from Buchser High School in 1980 before obtaining an electrical engineering degree from San Jose State University. He began his professional life as an engineer at Hewlett-Packard, later moving into product management and business development roles at Go Corporation and The 3DO Company. In 1991, he earned an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

During his tenure at Netscape Communications, Kordestani held the role of director of OEM Sales and eventually served as vice president of Business Development and Sales. Over a four-year period, he facilitated key corporate relationships with firms such as Amazon, Citibank, eBay, and Intel. His strategic oversight contributed to the growth of Netscape's website revenue, which increased from an annual run-rate of $88 million to over $200 million within an 18-month timeframe.
Executive Tenures at Google and Twitter
Kordestani first joined Google in May 1999, where he directed the development of the company's initial business model and served as senior vice president for worldwide sales and field operations until 2009. He returned in July 2014 to serve as chief business officer. In 2015, he moved to Twitter to serve as executive chairman, a position he held until June 2020. He remained a board member until October 2022. In 2024, he initiated legal action against X Corp and Elon Musk regarding unpaid stock options following the dissolution of the Twitter board.
Philanthropic and Board Engagements
Beyond his operational roles, Kordestani served as a director of Vodafone from March 2013 to October 2014. In 2021, he was appointed chairman of the board at Pearson plc, with his duties becoming effective in March 2022. His philanthropic contributions include co-founding the PARSA Community Foundation in 2006, an organization based in Redwood City dedicated to Iranian heritage and entrepreneurship, which operated until 2011.
