Oleg Deripaska emerged from the collapse of the Soviet Union to establish one of the world's most significant aluminium producers. By applying a methodical, scientific approach to metal trading during the 1990s, he transitioned from a physics graduate into an influential industrialist, eventually founding the global conglomerate Basic Element and leading the growth of United Company Rusal.
Early Development and Academic Background
Born in 1968 in Dzerzhinsk, Deripaska was raised in Ust-Labinsk. His early years involved significant practical labor on a small farm under the guidance of his grandparents. In 1985, he enrolled in the physics faculty of Moscow State University, though his studies were interrupted by military service in the Soviet Strategic Missile Forces between 1986 and 1989. He eventually graduated with a physics degree in 1993, later obtaining a master's degree from the Plekhanov Russian Economic University in 1996.

Deripaska launched his career by establishing the metal trading firm VTK at age 25. He leveraged export arbitrage, purchasing raw materials at domestic prices and selling them on international markets. These profits funded his initial acquisition of shares in the Sayanogorsk aluminium smelter. By 1994, he held the position of director general at the facility, using it as a cornerstone to form the Sibirsky Aluminium Group in 1997.
Consolidation of Industrial Assets
In 2000, Deripaska partnered with Millhouse Capital to create Rusal. The enterprise grew through mergers with SUAL Group and Glencore International AG in 2007 to form UC Rusal, with Deripaska serving as chairman. Beyond metals, his holding company Basic Element expanded into diverse sectors including energy via EuroSibEnergo, automotive manufacturing through GAZ Group, and insurance via Ingosstrakh. In 2010, he oversaw the listing of Rusal on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Geopolitical Standing and Sanctions
Deripaska holds citizenship in both Russia and Cyprus. In recent years, his business activities have been affected by international restrictions. He was placed under U.S. sanctions in 2022 following the annexation of Crimea, and later faced asset freezes and travel bans from the British government regarding the invasion of Ukraine. Deripaska has publicly characterized the invasion as madness and has subsequently faced pressure from the Kremlin, including the seizure of assets.
