Surpassing the previous benchmark held by Gennady Padalka on 4 February 2024, Kononenko became the most experienced space traveler in history. Early Career and Technical Training
Born in 1964 in Türkmenabat, Turkmenistan, Kononenko initially worked at the Türkmenabat Airport aviation technical base. He later attended the National Aerospace University – Kharkiv Aviation Institute, graduating in 1988 as a mechanical engineer. His career began at the Central Specialized Design Bureau TsSKB-Progress in Kuybishev, where he focused on the design and electrical power systems of spacecraft.

Selected as a cosmonaut candidate in March 1996, he underwent training at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center and achieved the title of test cosmonaut in 1998. By October 1998, he transitioned into the International Space Station program, eventually serving as a backup for Soyuz TM-34 and progressing through primary crew assignments for various expeditions.
Expedition Record and Spacewalks
Kononenko completed his first mission, Expedition 17, in 2008, spending 199 days in orbit. During this flight, he conducted two spacewalks totaling over 12 hours to inspect the Soyuz TMA-12 and install equipment on the Zvezda module. Subsequent missions saw him command Expeditions 31, 58, 59, and 71, solidifying his role as a central figure in continuous ISS operations.
Awards and Recognition
Throughout his career, Kononenko has received numerous national and international accolades. His recognitions include the title of Pilot-Cosmonaut of the Russian Federation, the Hero of Turkmenistan, the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, and the Order of Orange-Nassau. He holds the 1st, 3rd, and 4th class ranks of the Order For Merit to the Fatherland.
