The restoration of the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim relied on the participation of Ole Falck Ebbell between 1882 and 1894. Active across Norway during the late nineteenth century, this architect balanced professional design practice with a significant academic career, eventually guiding the architectural department at the institution that became the Norwegian Institute of Technology.
Academic Training and Early Career
Born in Christiania in 1839, Ebbell pursued technical education abroad. He completed studies at the Polytechnicum in Hannover, now known as Leibniz University Hannover, and attended ETH Zurich for engineering. Before establishing himself in Trondheim, he spent several years working in his hometown of Oslo. His shift toward academic leadership began in 1871 when he started teaching mechanics and architecture at the Trondheim Technical Learning Institution. By 1891, he reached the position of department head.

Ebbell directed his design expertise toward various public and religious structures. His portfolio includes the Eg Sykehus, a psychiatric facility in Kristiansand finished in 1881, and the Kalvskinnet School in Trondheim completed in 1885. He also contributed ecclesiastical designs, notably the Elvran Chapel in Stjørdal Municipality, consecrated in 1893, and the Snillfjord Church in Orkland Municipality, which dates to 1898. Additional urban projects involved the 1870 reconstruction of the Trondheim Library, originally serving as the City Hall, and the design of the Rotvoll Asylum, currently functioning as part of the Sør-Trøndelag University College.
Legacy and Personal Life
Married to Elisa Brun, Ebbell lived until 1919. He was buried at the Domkirkegården. His son, Ole-Falk Ebbell-Staehelin, pursued a career as a civil engineer and became known for his contribution to the construction of the Second Goetheanum located in Dornach, Switzerland.
