Early Background and Origins
Born in 1892 in Cazin, Nurija Pozderac was one of 11 children born to Murat Pozderac. His father held the position of leader of Cazin during the era of the Ottoman Empire. Pozderac grew up in a large household as one of seven sons alongside four sisters. Before entering the political sphere, he worked as a teacher.

During the 1930s, Pozderac transitioned into politics, serving as a minister in local legislative and administrative bodies within Cazin as a member of the Yugoslav Muslim Organization. Following the 1941 occupation of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, he refused an appointment within the government of the Independent State of Croatia. He subsequently aligned himself with the Yugoslav National Liberation Movement. By 1942, he served as the president of the National Liberation Committee in Cazin and later ascended to vice president of the Executive Board of the Anti-Fascist Council for the National Liberation of Yugoslavia (AVNOJ).
Final Conflict and Recognition
In June 1943, during the Battle of Sutjeska, Pozderac sustained mortal wounds from aerial bombardment while retreating near Perućica. He died four days later in the presence of his son, Sead. In 2012, he and his wife, Devleta, were honored as Righteous Among the Nations for their efforts to shelter Jewish people. His contributions were also recognized with the Order of the People's Liberation.
