Nwankwo Christian Kanu began his professional career with Iwuanyanwu Nationale before transitioning to European football in 1993. Over a trajectory spanning clubs including Ajax, Inter Milan, and several English sides, he established himself as a versatile forward. His career trajectory necessitated significant personal resilience following a serious heart defect diagnosis during his tenure at Inter Milan.
European Development
In 1993, Kanu joined Ajax for an undisclosed fee. He made 54 appearances and scored 25 goals for the Dutch club, contributing to their 1995 UEFA Champions League victory against AC Milan. The following year, he played the entirety of the 1996 final against Juventus. In 1996, he transferred to Inter Milan for approximately $4.7 million.

Shortly after joining Inter Milan, a routine medical examination revealed a heart defect. Despite the severity of the condition, club president Massimo Moratti financed a corrective procedure to replace an aortic valve in Cleveland. Kanu underwent successful surgery in November 1996 and returned to competitive play by April 1997. This experience prompted him to establish the Kanu Heart Foundation to assist children with heart conditions.
Tenure at Arsenal
Kanu joined Arsenal in February 1999 for £4.15 million. He recorded 197 appearances and scored 44 goals during his time with the club. Notable performances included a hat-trick against Chelsea in October 1999. He remained with Arsenal until his contract concluded in 2004, having been part of the 2003 FA Cup winning squad. In 2006, he scored a goal in Dennis Bergkamp’s testimonial match at the Emirates Stadium.
English League Transitions
Following his departure from Arsenal, Kanu moved to West Bromwich Albion on a free transfer in 2004. He made his debut on 14 August 2004 against Blackburn Rovers and scored his first goal for the club on 18 September 2004 against Fulham. During the 2004-05 season, the club achieved survival in the Premier League. He later continued his career with Portsmouth.
