Early Education and Career Beginnings
Born in Madurai in 1959, she completed her Bachelor of Arts in Economics at Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College in 1980. She later attended Jawaharlal Nehru University, where she earned a Master of Arts and a Master of Philosophy by 1984. Before her political rise, she gained professional experience in the United Kingdom as a salesperson at Habitat and an assistant at the Agricultural Engineers Association. Upon returning to India, she worked as a senior manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers and contributed to the Centre for Public Policy Studies in Hyderabad.

Sitharaman entered formal politics by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2006. She served on the national executive committee starting in 2008 and acted as a national spokesperson from 2010 to 2014. Her parliamentary career began in 2014 when she was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh. Following the 2014 general election, she was appointed as the minister of state with independent charge of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Cabinet Ministerial Roles
In 2017, she was appointed Minister of Defence, making her the first woman to hold the position full-time. During this time, the Indian Armed Forces executed the Balakot airstrike in February 2019. In May 2019, she transitioned to the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Corporate Affairs. Her work as finance minister continued through the 2024 general election, where she was reappointed to the cabinet. Under her fiscal stewardship, India reached the status of the world's fourth-largest economy by 2025.
