Nikola Karabatić

Nikola Karabatić earned the title of IHF World Player of the Year three times, securing the award in 2007, 2014, and 2016. Early Development and Domestic Success

Born in Niš in 1984 to a Croatian father, Branko, and a Serbian mother, Radmila, Karabatić relocated to France at the age of 3.5. His father, a former professional player, provided the foundation for his entry into the sport. He began his professional career with Montpellier HB, securing four consecutive French league titles between 2002 and 2005. His success in the EHF Champions League in 2003 signaled his rapid rise within European handball ranks.

Career in Germany and Spain

In 2005, Karabatić transferred to the German club THW Kiel. During his tenure, which lasted until 2009, he won four consecutive German league titles and the 2007 EHF Champions League. He was named Handball Player of the Year in Germany twice, in 2007 and 2008. Following a return to Montpellier and a brief stint at Pays d'Aix Université Club in 2013, he joined FC Barcelona. In Spain, he continued to add domestic trophies to his collection before joining PSG Handball in 2015.

International Dominance

Karabatić represents the pinnacle of French national team success. He holds three Olympic gold medals from the 2008, 2012, and 2020 Games, and four World Championship titles won in 2009, 2011, 2015, and 2017. Additionally, he secured four European Championship gold medals. His international career concluded with his retirement in 2024, the same year he was inducted into the EHF Hall of Fame.

Legal and Professional Challenges

The trajectory of his career included a significant legal complication in 2012. On September 30, he was arrested alongside his brother, Luka, and his wife in connection with an investigation into match-fixing. Despite these events, he continued his professional activity, ultimately maintaining a lengthy career that spanned over two decades at the highest levels of European club and international handball competition.
