Academic and Early Professional Training
Born in 1876 at Sant'Antimo, Nicola Romeo pursued a rigorous technical education. He completed his initial engineering studies at the University of Naples Federico II, graduating in 1899. Seeking further expertise, he moved to Liège, Belgium, where he earned a second bachelor's degree specifically focused on electrical engineering. This international perspective influenced his subsequent return to Italy in 1911.

Upon returning to Italy, Romeo founded Ing. Nicola Romeo e Co., a venture initially dedicated to manufacturing equipment for the mining sector. His interests expanded significantly through the acquisition of A.L.F.A., the Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili. Renaming the entity to reflect his own identity, he oversaw the release of the 1921 Torpedo 20/30 HP. Throughout his career, he managed a diverse portfolio of manufacturing companies, including Società Nicola Romeo di Saronno, Costruzioni Meccaniche di Saronno, CEMSA, Officine Ferroviarie Meridionali, and Industrie Meccaniche e Aeronautiche Meridionali.
Corporate Challenges and Public Service
Despite the reputation his vehicles gained for safety and elegance, the automotive arm of his business faced severe financial strain. By 1927, a series of poor investments brought the company to the brink of liquidation. Although Pasquale Gallo, the incoming CEO, successfully convinced Romeo to remain as president for a brief period, he officially ended his association with the firm in 1928. Following his departure from the company, Romeo entered the political sphere, serving as a senator of the Kingdom of Italy from 1929 until his death in 1938.
