He engaged in regional theater across the United States, including a three-year stint at the Old Log Theater in Minnesota. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, he worked as a model, appearing on packaging and in advertisements for Clairol hair lighteners before achieving his professional breakthrough in the 1976 television miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man.
