Early Racing Progression
Born in Mönchengladbach on 10 May 1977, Heidfeld began karting in 1988. By 1994, he competed in German Formula Ford, winning eight of nine races to claim the championship. He followed this with the 1995 German International Formula Ford 1800 title. After a third-place finish in the 1996 German Formula Three Championship, he secured the title the following year. His junior career peaked with victory in the 1999 International Formula 3000 Championship, following a runner-up performance in 1998.

Heidfeld debuted in the 2000 Australian Grand Prix for Prost. In 2001, he moved to Sauber, securing his maiden podium at the Brazilian Grand Prix. After a 2004 stint with Jordan, he joined Williams in 2005, where he claimed his only pole position at the European Grand Prix. From 2006 to 2009, he raced for BMW Sauber, achieving a career-best fifth in the 2007 World Drivers' Championship. He concluded his Formula One career in 2011 after substituting for an injured Robert Kubica at Renault.
Endurance and Formula E
Beyond Grand Prix racing, Heidfeld competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans six times, winning the LMP1-L class in 2014. He raced in the FIA World Endurance Championship from 2012 to 2016 with Rebellion and finished second in the 2013 American Le Mans Series. In 2014, he transitioned to the inaugural Formula E season with Venturi, later joining Mahindra for three seasons and securing eight total podiums in the series.
