Early Administrative Roles
Born in Ta'if in 1934 to King Abdulaziz and Hassa bint Ahmed Al Sudairi, Nayef received his early education at the Princes' School. His professional life in government commenced in 1952, when he served as the vice governor of Riyadh. By 1953, he was appointed governor of Riyadh, a position he held for one year. His subsequent administrative experience included serving as the governor of the Medina Region.

In 1975, King Khalid appointed Nayef as the minister of interior, a role that positioned him at the center of the kingdom's security apparatus for nearly four decades. During this tenure, he spearheaded structural changes, including the 2000 establishment of the General Directorate of Prisons. He also managed domestic responses to internal security threats and terrorist activity between 2003 and 2006. His authority extended to overseeing foreign labor regulations and implementing the 2001 issuance of independent identity cards for women.
Ascension to Crown Prince
The political standing of Nayef evolved significantly in the final years of his life. In March 2009, he was named second deputy prime minister, an appointment that granted him broader influence over domestic and foreign policy. Following the death of Crown Prince Sultan, King Abdullah appointed Nayef as the Crown Prince and first deputy prime minister in October 2011. He continued to manage various portfolios, including the oversight of the Hajj supreme committee and media regulation until his death in Geneva on 16 June 2012.
