Born in 1964 in the Schaerbeek district of Brussels, Natacha Atlas built a career defined by the fusion of Western electronic music and traditional Arabic styles. Throughout her decades-long trajectory, she has moved between solo recording projects, collaborative efforts, and soundtrack contributions, establishing herself as a presence in both the world music and jazz performance landscapes.
Early Career and Musical Foundations
Atlas spent her youth in Northampton before returning to Belgium at age 24. Her entry into the professional music scene began with belly dancing and lead vocals for a salsa band. By 1989, she recorded her debut guest vocal for the track Encantador with the band ¡Loca!. Shortly thereafter, she joined the ethnic electronica group Transglobal Underground as their primary vocalist and dancer. Her early collaborative work also included contributions to Daniel Ash’s debut solo album in 1991 and five tracks for Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart.

Beginning in 1995 with the album Diaspora, Atlas transitioned into a focused solo career. She produced several records with Tim Whelan and Hamilton Lee, including Halim, Gedida, and Ayeshteni. Her vocal contributions have been frequent in film and television, with appearances on soundtracks for projects such as Kingdom of Heaven, Hulk, and Sex and the City 2. Additionally, her music has featured in interactive media, specifically the video games Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Project Gotham Racing 4.
Collaborative Ventures and Genre Shifts
Atlas has maintained a diverse collaborative record, working with artists ranging from Jean-Michel Jarre on the track C'est la vie to Belinda Carlisle on the 2007 album Voila. She provided vocals for Peter Gabriel’s Big Blue Ball project and collaborated with Nigel Kennedy and Kroke. Her later studio work saw a shift in focus toward jazz and orchestral arrangements. Albums such as Myriad Road, produced by Ibrahim Maalouf, and the 2019 release Strange Days marked this evolution in her sound, while she simultaneously rejoined Transglobal Underground in 2020.
