Born in Moscow in 1989, Nastia Liukin transitioned from a child in a training gym to one of the most decorated gymnasts in United States history. As the daughter of two former Soviet champion athletes, she navigated a career spanning over a decade, culminating in major international titles before her retirement from elite competition in July 2012.
Early Development and Relocation
The daughter of Valeri Liukin and Anna Kotchneva, Nastia Liukin moved to the United States when she was two and a half years old. Following a period in New Orleans, the family settled in Texas. In 1994, her father co-founded the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy in Plano, where Liukin began training at age three. She attended Spring Creek Academy in Plano, graduating in 2007.

Liukin entered her first national championships in 2002. Despite an uneven bars fall that restricted her ranking, she secured a spot on the U.S. National Team and contributed to gold at the 2002 Junior Pan American Championships. By 2003, she claimed the U.S. junior national all-around title and repeated this victory in 2004.
Olympic and International Success
Liukin won her first senior national title in 2005. She served as a standout performer at the 2008 Olympic Games, winning the individual all-around gold. Over her career, she accumulated nine World Championship medals. Her athletic accomplishments eventually led to her 2018 induction into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame and her 2019 induction into the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Hall of Fame.
Post-Competitive Life
Following a failed attempt to qualify for the 2012 Olympic team, Liukin announced her retirement from the sport on July 2, 2012. Her subsequent work includes hosting the annual Nastia Liukin Cup, a competition for Level 10 gymnasts. She also served as a television commentator for NBC Sports and appeared as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. Her academic pursuits concluded with a degree from New York University in 2016, where she studied sports management and psychology.
