Nandi Bushell: The Girl Who Beat Dave Grohl
In the summer of 2020, an eleven-year-old in Ipswich, England, posted a drum cover challenging Dave Grohl to a duel. Grohl accepted, recorded his own take, and after a months-long back-and-forth, publicly conceded that she had beaten him. A year later she was standing on stage at the sold-out Forum in Los Angeles, closing out a Foo Fighters show by playing "Everlong" with the band itself.
From a Beatles Video to a Drum Kit
Nandi Bushell was born on 28 April 2010 in Durban, South Africa, to a Zulu mother, Lungile, from KwaZulu-Natal, and a British father, John, a former university band musician; she has described herself as "British and Zulu." The family moved to Ipswich, Suffolk, when she was two, and she has lived there since. Her fascination with drumming began after watching her father's video of the Beatles performing "Hey Jude" and becoming captivated by Ringo Starr. Her parents bought her first drum kit as a reward for a school achievement, and her father noticed her natural sense of rhythm as early as age five. She began formal lessons at six, later recalling that the first week was "really hard, but then I just got it." As a young child she sat in on jam sessions with adult musicians at local pubs through the Ipswich Rock Project, and by age seven she was already appearing in home-made music videos, including one built around a 2017 cover of System of a Down's "Toxicity."

Bushell's public profile grew through television advertising — a 2018 John Lewis & Partners spot built around "Bohemian Rhapsody" that required three auditions, and an award-winning Argos Christmas campaign the following year. In June 2019 she met Lenny Kravitz backstage at a sound check at The O2 Arena; that November, her drum cover of Nirvana's "In Bloom" went viral, drawing more than ten million views on Twitter within a week. In December 2019 she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and was given a bass guitar as a gift. The defining moment came in 2020: over several months during the pandemic, Bushell and Grohl traded drum covers of Foo Fighters songs "Everlong" and "Dead End Friends" in an escalating, good-natured battle that Grohl ultimately conceded, calling her performance the better one. Within six months her following had grown past 800,000 on Instagram and 250,000 on YouTube. She and Grohl finally met in person on 26 August 2021 at The Forum in California, where she played "Everlong" to close the band's set; Grohl introduced her from the stage as "our friend, the coolest fucking drummer in the world... the biggest rock star on the bill." Reviewing the show, Variety's Jessica Shalvoy wrote she was "absolutely shredding... [she] sounded like she'd been touring with Foos for 26 years," while Billboard's Gil Kaufman noted "the band's ecstatic preteen protégé flawlessly played them home like a pro."
Beyond the Kit
Bushell plays drums, guitar, bass, piano, and saxophone, and sings. In 2021 she became Cartoon Network's first official musician-in-residence and collaborated with Roman Morello on the climate-advocacy song "The Children Will Rise Up," which featured Tom Morello, Jack Black, and Greta Thunberg; the song's message was praised by Barack Obama at COP26. She also appeared as a drummer girl in the 2021 film "Cinderella," directed by Kay Cannon, and joined a Ringo Starr-organized cover of "Come Together" for the WhyHunger project. In 2022 she performed at the Platinum Jubilee of Elizabeth II, released her debut original single "The Shadows" — written to support her father through a period of depression — and played at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert at Wembley Stadium. That October she received the Blue Peter Gold Badge, the programme's highest honor, previously given to figures including Ed Sheeran, Madonna, and Queen Elizabeth II, and the same year she became the youngest artist to appear on the cover of Modern Drummer magazine. In 2023 she released "Sweet Nightmares," featuring backing vocals from actor Josh Brolin, and appeared in the book "Rebel Girls Rock." In March 2025 she formed a new band, Blu Reflection, with two friends, releasing the single "The Only One."
Why Nandi Is Called a Genius
No formal claim of intellectual genius attaches to Bushell; what draws attention is a specific physical and musical skill — rhythmic precision, stamina, and stagecraft that a professional touring drummer would envy, developed and displayed while she was still a small child. Dave Grohl, one of rock's most respected drummers, put it in terms of instinct rather than intellect: "There's something about seeing the joy and energy of a kid in love with an instrument. She just seemed like a force of nature." That is the honest frame: a prodigious physical and musical talent, built through daily practice from age five or six, rather than an abstract cognitive gift. Her own father captured the asymmetry candidly: "I was extremely happy that Nandi was so good. But, at the same time, I was feeling quite inferior... to a five-year-old." The skill is craft — hand-eye-foot coordination, timing, and showmanship — refined obsessively and amplified by social media into global visibility, not a demonstration of unusual reasoning or invention.
Legacy
Still a teenager, Bushell has already shared stages with musicians decades into their careers, turned a pandemic-era video challenge into a genuine friendship with one of rock's most famous drummers, and used her platform for causes from climate advocacy to anti-bullying campaigns, all while continuing to write and release her own original music.
