The 1981 film Sogni d’oro earned the Special Jury Prize at the 38th Venice International Film Festival, while the 1986 film La messa è finita secured the Silver Bear at the 36th Berlin International Film Festival. The 1994 film Caro diario earned him the European Film Academy Critics Award. His 1989 film Red Wood Pigeon drew inspiration from his athletic history in the B division of the Italian water polo championship.
Political Engagement and Industry Leadership
Beyond his creative work, Moretti maintains an active presence in Italian political discourse. In 1989, he produced the documentary The Thing, chronicling the aftermath of the Italian Communist Party’s dissolution. He later organized street protests against the administration of Silvio Berlusconi in 2002. His film The Caiman, released in 2006, included a portrayal of the former Prime Minister. Moretti served as President of the Jury at the Cannes Festival in 2012, the same year he was named Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres.

Moretti continues to operate the Nuovo Sacher, a movie theater in Rome that reflects his personal interests.
