Securing 53.85% of the vote in the 2016 general election, Nana Akufo-Addo became the first opposition candidate in Ghanaian history to unseat an incumbent president by winning an outright majority in the first round. His tenure, which lasted from 2017 until 2025, represented the culmination of a political career spanning decades in the New Patriotic Party.
Early Education and Legal Training
Born in Accra in 1944, Akufo-Addo attended Holmewood House Preparatory School in England before continuing his studies at Lancing College. He briefly enrolled at New College, Oxford, in 1962 but returned to Ghana to teach at Accra Academy. He subsequently studied economics at the University of Ghana, graduating in 1967. His legal training occurred through the Inns of Court in London, leading to his call to the English Bar at Middle Temple in 1971 and the Ghanaian bar in 1975. He eventually co-founded the law firm Akufo-Addo, Prempeh and Co. in 1979.

Akufo-Addo served as a Member of the Parliament of Ghana for the Abuakwa constituency from 1997 to 2009, covering the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Parliaments of the 4th Republic. Under President John Kufuor, he held the dual role of Attorney General and Minister of Justice between 2001 and 2003. He later transitioned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he served until 2007.
Path to the Presidency
The path to the presidency involved multiple electoral challenges. After losing in 2008 to John Atta Mills and in 2012 to John Dramani Mahama, Akufo-Addo successfully challenged for the presidency in 2016. He secured a second term in 2020 by winning 51.59% of the vote. His presidency focused on a 'Ghana Beyond Aid' agenda, though his final years were defined by significant economic challenges, including inflation rates reaching 40% during 2022 and 2023.
