Medical training in Moscow during the 1970s preceded a career dedicated to both clinical practice and political reform for Mustafa Barghouti. Born in 1954 in Jerusalem, he utilized his expertise in internal medicine and cardiology to establish community-based health networks while navigating the complexities of regional legislative processes and independent policy research within the Palestinian territories.
Medical Foundation and Early Activism
After completing his medical studies in 1978, Barghouti returned to practice at Makassed Hospital. During this period, he identified a need for self-reliant healthcare infrastructure. Along with several colleagues, he founded the Palestinian Medical Relief Society. This organization focused on primary care and mobile clinics, eventually expanding its service network across the West Bank and Gaza Strip. His clinical work was interrupted in 1996 when he was shot by an Israeli sniper while attending to injured civilians.
