Since his national team debut in 2005, the right-handed batter and wicket-keeper has maintained a professional tenure spanning two decades, including lengthy spells as captain in all three formats of the international game.
Formative Years and Education
Born in Bogura on 9 May 1987, Rahim was the son of Mahbub Habib and Rahima Khatun. He attended Bogura Zilla School for his secondary education before receiving training at the Bangladesh Institute of Sports. Alongside his sporting commitments, he pursued academic studies in history at Jahangirnagar University, where he completed a master's degree in 2012. He married Jannatul Kifayet Mondi in 2014 and has one son, Mayan, born in 2018.

Rahim represented Bangladesh at the youth level, participating in three Youth Tests and 18 Youth ODIs between 2004 and 2006. As captain during the 2006 U-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka, he guided the team to the quarter-finals. His senior international debut occurred during the 2005 tour of England, where he appeared in the first Test at Lord's. He later established himself as the primary wicket-keeper at the 2007 World Cup, surpassing the tenure of Khaled Mashud.
Leadership and Career Milestones
Between 2011 and 2017, Rahim served as the Test captain for the national side, while also leading the ODI and T20I squads from 2011 to 2014. As of June 2026, he holds the record for the most Test runs scored by a Bangladeshi player. His domestic career includes a long-standing association with the Rajshahi Division, beginning in 2006, and a transition to the Sylhet Division in 2025.
T20 League Participation
Since the inception of the Bangladesh Premier League in 2012, Rahim has played for several franchises, including Duronto Rajshahi, Sylhet Royals, Barisal Bulls, Chittagong Vikings, Khulna Tigers, Beximco Dhaka, and Fortune Barishal. In January 2023, he became the first cricketer to feature in 100 matches in the tournament. He also played for Nangarhar in the 2018 Afghanistan Premier League.
