Mustapha Hadji received the African Footballer of the Year award in 1998 following his performance in France. Born in Ifrane Atlas-Saghir on 16 November 1971, he moved to France with his family at age ten. He maintained dual citizenship while pursuing a professional career as an attacking midfielder characterized by significant pace and technical skill.
Early Career in France and Europe
Hadji began his professional path at Nancy, where he transitioned from the youth setup to the senior squad. After five seasons there, he moved to Sporting Lisbon and subsequently joined Deportivo la Coruña. In 1999, Gordon Strachan signed him to Coventry City, where he became a prominent figure in the English league alongside fellow Moroccan Youssouf Chippo. Following Coventry's relegation in 2001, he transferred to Aston Villa. His tenure there included a UEFA Intertoto Cup title in 2001, although his playing time became sporadic before he moved to Espanyol in Spain.

His international commitment included thirteen qualification matches and representation at various tournaments, earning him the CAF Legends award in 2011. After his time in Spain, he played for Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates for one year. In 2005, he signed with the German club Saarbrücken. His stint there included a 4-0 loss to Bochum and a DFB-Pokal match against Unterhaching where he scored before being sent off. He concluded his playing career with Fola Esch in Luxembourg, where he remained from 2007 until his retirement in 2010.
Coaching and Administrative Roles
His transition to management began as an assistant at the Qatari club Umm Salal under Bertrand Marchand during the 2012-13 season. Later, he served as an assistant for the Morocco national team under Badou Ezzaki starting before the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. He held this position until 2022, when the Confederation of African Football suspended him for falsifying his coaching licence.
