Mubarak Wakaso

A professional career spanning over a decade and multiple continents defined the life of Ghanaian midfielder Mubarak Wakaso. Born in Tamale on 25 July 1990, he transitioned from local beginnings at Ashanti Gold SC to competing in the top divisions of Spain, Russia, Scotland, Greece, Belgium, and China.

Spanish League Tenure

Wakaso moved to Spain in 2008, signing with Elche CF. His tenure there lasted until 2011, when he joined the reserve side of Villarreal CF. He debuted in La Liga on 27 February 2011 against Racing de Santander. Following his time with the Yellow Submarine, he joined RCD Espanyol in 2012 on a four-year contract. His later Spanish experience included stints at UD Las Palmas, Granada CF, and a three-year deal with Alavés signed in 2017.

International Expeditions

The midfielder sought opportunities across various international leagues throughout his playing days. In 2013, he joined the Russian club FC Rubin Kazan. He subsequently embarked on a season-long loan to Celtic in 2014, where he secured titles in the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish League Cup. He later played for Panathinaikos in Greece before moving to the Chinese Super League, representing Jiangsu Suning and later Shenzhen F.C.

Representing Ghana

International service was a cornerstone of his career, beginning with the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship in Peru. His senior debut occurred on 13 October 2012 during a qualifier against Malawi. He was a frequent presence at the Africa Cup of Nations, finishing as the tournament top scorer in 2013 with four goals. He also participated in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, appearing in a group stage match against Germany.
