Mohamed Hussein Tantawi

Mohamed Hussein Tantawi served as Egypt's Minister of Defense and Military Production for over two decades, wielding significant influence during the final years of the Hosni Mubarak era. Following the 2011 revolution, he assumed the role of de facto head of state as chairman of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces until the presidential inauguration in 2012.

Military Foundations and Early Service

Born in Cairo in 1935, Tantawi began his military training at the Egyptian Military Academy in 1952. He received his commission as an infantry officer in 1955. His early career included deployments during the North Yemen Civil War and several major regional conflicts, including the Six-Day War of 1967 and the October War of 1973, where he commanded the 16th mechanized infantry battalion as a lieutenant colonel.

Command and Ministerial Tenure

Tantawi rose through the ranks, serving as a military attaché to Pakistan between 1983 and 1985 before commanding the Second Field Army and the Republican Guard Forces. In 1991, he led Egyptian forces during the U.S.-led Gulf War. Later that year, he was appointed Minister of Defense and Military Production, a position he retained until 2012. He achieved the rank of field marshal in 1993.

Transition of Power

After President Hosni Mubarak resigned on 11 February 2011, Tantawi transferred authority to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which he headed. During this period, the council dissolved parliament and oversaw a constitutional referendum. Tantawi managed relations with international leaders, including David Cameron and Hillary Clinton, while facing domestic unrest. He stepped down on 12 August 2012 following an order by President Mohamed Morsi.
