Following his doctoral studies, he participated in various political circles, including temporary associations with the National Bolshevik Party and the Eurasia Party. In 2024, Russian authorities initiated a criminal case against him for alleged calls to terrorism following his public criticism of the invasion of Ukraine, resulting in his inclusion on a state list of extremists. In June 2026, he was detained at Zvartnots International Airport in Armenia at the request of Russia. Following international advocacy from institutions including the French Mathematical Society and IMPA, he was released five days later.
Independent Music Publishing
He founded the independent record label UR-Realist Records in 1998 to distribute experimental music. The label facilitated the release of over 40 albums, featuring acts such as Grazhdanskaya Oborona, Instruktsiya po Vyzhivaniyu, Rada i Ternovnik, and Kooperativ Nishtyak.
