Academic and Medical Career
Born in Zalaegerszeg in 1939, Réthelyi pursued his medical training at the Medical University of Pécs between 1957 and 1963. He later attained the status of professor emeritus in 2009. His academic leadership roles included serving as rector from 1985 until 1991. Throughout his career, he focused his research on neurology and anatomy, publishing extensive studies on spinal cord structures and synaptic connections, including collaborative works with János Szentágothai such as the three-volume Funkcionális anatómia.

Upon his appointment as the Minister of National Resources, Réthelyi declared his intent to serve only half of the standard four-year term. During this time, he managed a complex super ministry. His leadership team featured state secretaries including Attila Czene for sport, Rózsa Hoffmann for education, Miklós Soltész for social affairs, Miklós Szócska for health, and Géza Szőcs for culture. He officially resigned from his position on 3 May 2012.

Réthelyi received numerous accolades throughout his career for his contributions to medicine and public service. He was awarded the Academy Award of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1991 and the Szent-Györgyi Albert Prize in 2004.
