Mikko Franck

A painful spine condition dictates that Mikko Franck conducts from a seated position, a departure from the traditional posture of an orchestral leader. Born in Helsinki in 1979, the Finnish musician transitioned from violin studies to conducting at the Sibelius Academy, establishing an international presence before reaching the age of 23 through engagements with major European and Israeli ensembles.

Early Training and Education

Franck began learning the violin at age five. In 1992, he commenced formal violin studies at the Sibelius Academy. His transition to the podium occurred in 1995 when the institution granted him the opportunity to conduct an orchestra. This prompted Jorma Panula to accept him as a private student. Franck enrolled in Panula’s conducting class in 1996 and concluded his formal studies at the Academy in 1998 to pursue an international career.

Rapid International Ascendance

Before his 23rd birthday, Franck had secured conducting engagements with the London Philharmonia, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic, the Munich Philharmonic, and the Berlin State Opera Orchestra. His debut recording, featuring the works of Jean Sibelius, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Orchestral Performance. Beyond the standard repertoire, he frequently highlights the compositions of Einojuhani Rautavaara, including recordings of the opera Rasputin and various symphonic works.

Administrative and Artistic Leadership

From 2002 to 2007, Franck served as the artistic director of the Belgian National Orchestra. In August 2006, he assumed the role of general music director at the Finnish National Opera. His tenure there faced internal friction within six months due to disagreements with general director Erkki Korhonen and administrative director Pekka Kauranen. Following his resignation, the company offered him the dual titles of artistic director and general music director, which he retained until 2013.

Radio France and Current Status

Franck became the music director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in September 2015. He held this position until the conclusion of the 2024-2025 season. Outside of his professional duties, he was married to opera director Martina Pickert between 2006 and 2010. He continues to maintain his career as a conductor and violinist.
