Portuguese footballer

Luís Miguel Brito Garcia Monteiro, known professionally as Miguel, debuted for the Portugal national team on 12 February 2003 against Italy. A versatile athlete who transitioned from a winger to a right-back, he spent his professional career primarily competing in the Primeira Liga and La Liga, representing both S.L. Benfica and Valencia CF during his active years.

Early Career and Benfica

Born in Lisbon on 4 January 1980, Miguel developed in the youth system at Sporting CP before beginning his senior career at C.F. Estrela da Amadora. He made his first-team debut on 30 April 1999. In the summer of 2000, he transferred to S.L. Benfica. Under the guidance of Fernando Chalana, he shifted his role from right midfielder to right-back. His time at Benfica included winning the 2003–04 Taça de Portugal, the 2004–05 Primeira Liga, and the 2005 Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira.

Tenure at Valencia

In August 2005, Miguel transferred to Valencia CF for a fee of €7.5 million. He became a consistent starter for the Spanish club, signing a five-year contract extension in 2007. During his seven seasons in Spain, he participated in 239 official matches and helped the team secure the 2007–08 Copa del Rey title. His contract was not renewed in May 2012 following reports of unprofessional behaviour, and he later engaged in training with the syndicate of professional football players to maintain fitness.

International Competition

Miguel earned 59 caps for the Portugal national football team. He participated in the UEFA Euro 2004, where he became the starting right-back during the tournament before suffering an injury in the final against Greece. He played in every match for Portugal during the 2006 FIFA World Cup. His international career also included participation in the UEFA Euro 2008 and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He officially retired from international football in September 2010 at age 30.
