Professional Rise and Playing Style

Born in 1968 in Pinneberg, Germany, Stich turned professional in 1988 and captured his first top-level singles title in 1990 at Memphis. His competitive game was defined by versatility, allowing him to perform effectively from the baseline and at the net. He remains one of the few players to achieve tournament victories on all surfaces in both singles and doubles formats. By 1993, he reached his career-high singles ranking of world number two.

Successes in Doubles and Team Competition

Stich demonstrated consistent success in team formats, notably winning the men’s doubles title at the 1992 Wimbledon Championships alongside John McEnroe. The final required five hours and ended in a 19–17 set. During the same year, he partnered with Boris Becker to secure the gold medal in men's doubles at the Barcelona Olympics. His contributions were vital to Germany’s success in the 1993 Davis Cup, and he also claimed the 1993 Hopman Cup and the 1994 World Team Cup.

Retirement and Legacy

Following a career that included 18 ATP singles titles and 10 doubles titles, Stich retired in 1997 after a semifinal run at Wimbledon. His post-playing years include work as a tennis commentator for the BBC and advocacy through his AIDS foundation. His contributions to the sport were recognized with his induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2018 and Germany's Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. He currently resides in Hamburg.
