Michael Waidner completed his doctoral studies in 1991 at the University of Karlsruhe with a dissertation titled Byzantine distribution without cryptographic assumptions despite any number of errors. Since then, he has focused his professional career on the intersection of computer security, privacy, and cryptography, holding leadership roles in both academic institutions and large corporate research organizations.
Academic Foundations and Early Career
Born in 1961 in Mühlacker, Germany, Waidner pursued his undergraduate and postgraduate education at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Following the completion of his doctorate, he transitioned into the private sector. Between 1994 and 2006, he led research divisions dedicated to data protection and IT security at IBM Research in Zurich. During this period, he played a central role in founding the Zurich Information Security Center located at ETH Zurich.

Waidner moved to New York to continue his work with IBM. He served as the Chief Technology Officer for Security and chaired the IBM Security Architecture Board. He remained in these corporate positions until September 2010. His work during these years included collaboration on academic publications such as research on optimistic fair exchange protocols and key agreement methods for dynamic peer groups.
Institutional Roles and Public Policy
In 2010, Waidner returned to an academic and research-focused career in Germany. He assumed a professorship at the Technical University of Darmstadt and took on the directorship of the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology. He currently serves as director of ATHENE, which is recognized as the largest research institute for IT security in Europe. Beyond his academic duties, he has contributed to local governance as the chief digital officer of Darmstadt since 2017 and serves as a visiting professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
