Michael Servetus

Spanish physician and theologian

The career of Michael Servetus is a useful demonstration of how physiology actually advances - not in a single leap, but in results that hold.

Michael Servetus was born at Tudela in 1511. His recorded nationality is France. He was educated at University of Basel and University of Paris.

This was the period in which observation began to outrank inherited authority, and in which printing let a result reach readers who would never meet its author.

Physiology advanced through experiments whose ethics each generation has had to re-argue.

Like many of his contemporaries, Michael Servetus moved between physiology and astronomy without regarding the boundaries as real.

The France setting is not incidental. National academies, funding and language decided which findings travelled and which stayed local, in this period as in ours.

The measure that matters is durability. Results that survive re-examination become the floor of a discipline, and it is on that floor that everything afterwards is built.

A number of his statements have been preserved; they appear below.

Death came in 1553, at 42. By then the contribution had passed into the settled body of physiology, where it is used without being credited - the surest sign that it was right.
